There is something quietly assured about a vase of peonies. Their generous petals and soft, rounded forms bring to mind country-house gardens, inherited silver and a table set for people you love.
At Hoppipolla, we see peonies as a symbol of old-money elegance: seasonal, romantic and confident enough to make a statement with just a few beautiful stems.
Three peony looks to know in Australia
Coral, white and pink peonies each create a different mood. Australian growers cultivate many named varieties across these colours, including Coral Sunset, Duchesse de Nemours and Sarah Bernhardt. The variety available at your florist changes with the harvest.
Coral Sunset: a flower that changes with the day
Coral Sunset opens into a generous, semi-double bowl, often revealing a golden centre. Its colour is part of the pleasure: rich coral-orange softens through pink and pale yellow towards creamy white as the flower matures.
That changing palette gives an arrangement the warmth of an afternoon drawing to a close. We would style it with ivory wrapping, clear glass or a simple ceramic vase, leaving space around the heads so their shape can be appreciated. Coral Charm offers a related coral-to-ivory look, although it is a separate variety.
White peonies: Duchesse de Nemours and Marie Lemoine
Duchesse de Nemours: Rounded, full blooms in a soft off-white shade, with a fluffy centre and a delicate fragrance. This is a beautiful variety to ask about for a classic white peony bouquet.
Marie Lemoine: A creamy white, double-flowered peony with fragrance and generous layers of petals. Some blooms can show small red edges on individual petals, adding character to an otherwise soft white palette.
Both varieties are cultivated by Australian growers. Availability depends on the farm and the point in the season.
White is a colour family, so two bunches may have quite different shapes and tones. For a timeless look, let those differences work together: cream petals, a little fresh green and a vase with a generous opening.
Pink peonies: Sarah Bernhardt and other classics
Sarah Bernhardt: Large, double flowers in an apple-blossom shade of pink, with densely layered petals and a sweet perfume. This is a classic choice to ask about for a full, romantic pink peony bouquet.
Lady Alexander Duff: Fragrant, double blooms in blush pink, with rose-pink outer petals and a raised pink-to-cream centre. It brings a soft, layered look to a garden-style arrangement.
Monsieur Jules Elie: A fragrant pink variety with deeper rose-pink outer petals and a paler, incurved centre. Its layered form adds texture and gentle colour variation to a bouquet.
These pink varieties are grown in Australia, with the exact selection changing through the harvest.
Pink peonies suit a birthday bouquet, an anniversary or a small dinner-party arrangement. Our favourite approach is simple wrapping and enough room for the flowers to open. A pink peony with a visible golden centre can be beautiful too; colour alone does not identify a particular cultivar.
On screen: Blair Waldorf’s peony moment

In Gossip Girl’s fictional wedding between Blair Waldorf and Prince Louis, pale pink peonies and roses are part of the romantic floral styling. The combination of soft flowers, silk ribbon and formal dress captures the Upper East Side mood that makes peonies such a natural fit for an old-money-inspired palette.
Take the styling idea home with a softly gathered pink bouquet and an understated ribbon. The appeal is in the balance between abundant flowers and a composed finish.

Real weddings: Naomi Watts and Aerin Lauder
For her 2023 New York courthouse wedding to Billy Crudup, Naomi Watts carried a small white bouquet. Who What Wear reported peonies among its seasonal flowers, while Vogue’s photographs show how gracefully the bouquet sat with her ivory lace dress. It is a lovely reference for an intimate wedding with flowers kept close and personal.

Aerin Lauder offers another connection to the look. She has said that she used pale pink peonies on her wedding day and decorated the tables with peonies. In her first-person wedding account for Over The Moon, she described a setting filled with garden roses and peonies. Her bridal bouquet was lily of the valley; the peonies belonged to the wider wedding flowers.
Together, these examples show how peonies can suit both a quiet city ceremony and a garden celebration.

When are peonies in season in Australia?
Australian-grown peonies generally have a short season from October into December, with timing varying between regions, farms and varieties. Each individual variety has a much smaller flowering window within that season.
If you have a particular colour or variety in mind for a wedding or gift, enquire ahead and confirm what can be sourced for your date. A photograph is a useful guide to the mood, while the final flowers depend on the season.
